| BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept
Yesterday, DailyTech reported on VW's intention to bring a diesel-electric hybrid Golf to market. The hybrid powertrain would boost fuel economy to nearly 70 MPG on the small two/four-door hatchback. BMW also has diesel-electric hybrids on the brain with its new Vision EfficientDynamics concept vehicle. The concept is based on the X5 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and uses a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder Variable Twin Turbo diesel engine. The diesel motor develops 204 HP and 295 lb-ft of torque. Unlike the previous BMW X6 ActiveHybrid concept vehicle which was a full hybrid, the Vision EfficientDynamics is a mild-hybrid vehicle. A 15kw generator boosts total power to 221 HP, while regenerative braking steps in to help power the vehicle's electrical systems and recharge the rear-mounted lithium-ion battery pack.
Jaguar XK wins 'Car of the Year' and 'Best Coupe' awards
The XK Coupe also topped all cars in its category as the 'Best Coupe', out-beating competitors in the BMW 6 Series and the Porsche 911. The launch of the new XK earlier this year marked the beginning of an exciting era for Jaguar in terms of design and engineering which further extenuates the brand's reputation for building beautiful, fast cars that are thrilling to drive and gorgeous to look at. This award is yet another feather in Jaguar's cap as the new XK was awarded the 'Most exciting car to be launched in 2006' awarded by What Car? Magazine, the 'Engineering and Technology Award' at the prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards and the 'World Traffic Safety Symposium's Traffic Safety Achievement' Award in the Automaker category. It has been recognized for an all-new industry-leading feature - the pedestrian deployable bonnet which is designed to help mitigate the severity of injuries to pedestrians in the event of a collision with a car.
18-02-2008: All-new Volvo S80 adds beauty to safety
KUALA LUMPUR: Volvo's flagship S80 has been unabashedly forthright about its intentions to reside in the executive luxury class sector, alongside patricians likes Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5-Series. In a market where each marque makes a name for itself on at least one defining characteristic, Volvo has realised it needed two other ingredients — a shapely figure and power — to go with safety for which it has long been synonymous with. The S80 is testament to this. Volvo lent us the 3.2-litre all-new S80 so that we could gauge the full fury of the 238 horsepower engine. This luxury saloon radiates prestige without being pretentious, and is generous with interior space. Despite tipping the scales at 2,150kg, its six-cylinder engine has more than enough power to propel the S80 to 100km/h in a respectable 7.9 seconds.
Mop-up begins as river drops
The great mopping up operation began in Shropshire and Mid Wales today after eight days of flooding misery and disruption. River levels were dropping steadily and although a flood warning remained in place for the Severn in Shropshire, the severe warning for Shrewsbury has been downgraded. But several roads throughout the area remained closed and treacherous because of flood water. Three adults and a two-month-old girl were rescued by firefighters after their BMW car got stuck in Buildwas Road, Ironbridge, just after 3.30pm yesterday. Sub officer Andy Blizard, from Tweedale Fire Station, said: "Their engine had given out as they tried to drive through floodwaters and water had started to seep into the vehicle. "We led two men to safety and we carried the baby and then her mother to safety." .
Formula 1—Webber Tops Test Sheets
Robert Kubica was fourth fastest in a BMW, ahead of former dual world champion Fernando Alonso, in his return to Renault. Webber's latest test was in contrast to the RB4's previous run last month when his car twice stopped on the track. The team ran the Red Bull in the latest trial with a different engine cover fin which may have helped the car's pace. Webber's best lap was four-hundredths of a second faster than Kovalainen. Less than one second covered the top 10 cars, from Webber to the Torro Rosso of tenth-placed Sebastian Vettel. Webber's teammate, David Coulthard, was eighth fastest in the test, one spot behind rookie Sebastien Bourdais. Bourdais, who has moved to Formula One from Champ Cars, put in an impressive performance, beating teammate Vettel.
2008 Honda Accord EX sedan is able but clunky
Everyone but maybe Toyota likes Honda, the aloof, coolish engineer nerd of the auto industry. From snarling, wheel-standing crotch rockets to cheap, hard-edged Civic sedans, Honda builds unusually balanced, dynamic vehicles – a result, I think, of the company's vast racing experience. We love them here at the Daily Planet. If you sent out an e-mail saying there was a Honda with its lights on in the garage, our high-tech newsroom – Truth Central, I call it – would empty as hordes of reporters and editors loped outside to save their cherished Civics, Accords, Pilots and Odysseys. (Maybe that's a slight exaggeration. But I'm sure I wouldn't have much company inside if that happened.) So why was I so conflicted about the 2008 Accord EX I had recently, a four-door sedan that, at about 3,600 pounds, is now heavier than some Buicks and stranger-looking than many 5-series BMWs? After all, most of my colleagues in the automotive media continue to heap praise on the Accord, as competent and complete a sedan as ever.
Review: Subaru WRX
When the Subaru Impreza WRX made its U.S. debut in 2001, it seemed to herald a new era for car enthusiasts. An affordable performance machine that ran circles around cars costing twice the money, the "Scooby" was akin to a modern BMW 2002. The WRX presented itself as a smarter approach to going fast than anything else on the road, thanks to its ingenious all-wheel-drive system and turbocharged, four-cylinder engine. Each new car came with a membership in the Sports Car Club of America, encouraging owners to get involved in competitive rally racing. Subaru was, and still is, a major sponsor of rallying, where drivers race against the clock along treacherous winding roads. I went along for the ride. I was working at a magazine that had borrowed a 2002 WRX for a yearlong test, so I commandeered it and requested an assignment covering rallying.
Honda Civic Hybrid
I wouldn't call a BMW 3-series luxury. My mom's 2007 Camry has better interior materials and comfort, in my oppinion. I could never help but notice the engine noise and ride in a 3-series, and I'm sure a deisel spec wouldn't be any quieter. As said, the BMW is also in a different price class. You might potentially get more MPG compared to some hybrids, but you'll pay more, thousands more. The resale value of a BMW 3-series is staggeringly low (compared to a 5 or 7 series) and the performance of even the Prius is sure to best the BMW Deisel in acceleration and braking due to the Prius's substantial weight advantage. .
