Open-wheel stars in enter NASCAR, a different world
Dario Franchitti and Sam Hornish Jr. know a bit about the formerly named California Speedway, each having won here in a open-wheel car. However, that experience will count little this weekend when Franchitti and Hornish join Patrick Carpentier at the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Auto Club 500. Another open-wheel refugee, Juan Pablo Montoya, will also compete today. Montoya was brought into NASCAR by team owner ChipGanassi, for whom he ran in Championship Auto Racing Teams before moving to Formula One. Franchitti won at the Fontana track in 2005 under the CART banner while Hornish claimed the checkered flag in Indy Racing League races in 2002 and '03,each time by less than a second. In fact, Hornish's win in 2003 was the fastest race in track history; he averaged 207.151 mph at the Toyota Indy400.
JAQUITTA'S JOURNEY: Read Her Blog
I thought I'd write a quick blog before taking my 3 to 4 hour nap. Radiation has finally kicked in and it makes me incredibly tired. The doctors mentioned fatigue, and I'm experiencing it. To bottom line it: I feel tired the majority of the time. However, I only have a few days left before it's all over. The countdown is on! The only side note is that doctors have warned me that even though the radiation will be over in a few days, I may still feel the effects 2 months after. So, Happy Joy, joy right? Anyway, I try to sleep as much as I can. I will admit working and getting treatment is wearing on me a bit, but if it gets to be too much I just have to back off. I have to accept the fact that my extra pounds are still holding on. I've been told it comes off gradually, that the chemo med's are still kicking in my body and that's part of the reason why it's not coming off as rapidly as I'd like.
Stephanie Baker - TV transforms thinking
I am a child of the 1970s. Born at the tail end of the Baby Boom, I'm the youngest of six with 15 years separating me from my oldest sibling. By the time I came along, I had houseful of baby-sitters to keep me occupied - including my favorite: a 19-inch Admiral television. Forget jumprope and Barbie dolls. My favorite thing to do was watch TV. In retrospect, it probably wasn't the healthiest thing for a little girl to do during her formative years, but at least my parents always knew where I was. Television, beginning in the late 1960s, was my companion, friend and au pair. Yes, my parents were still there to help with my homework, read at bedtime and wipe away tears with hugs and kisses. But the Admiral was there not just for entertainment but also as my telescope to the outside world.
Formula 1 spies will be thrown out, FIA says
ANY Formula 1 team found guilty of spying in future can expect to be kicked out of the championship, FIA President Max Mosley has warned. McLaren were fined $116.37 million and stripped of all their 2007 constructors' points for a controversy involving Ferrari information. But despite the Mercedes-powered team's punishment, Spain's double world champion Fernando Alonso and his British rookie team-mate Lewis Hamilton were allowed to remain in the fight for the drivers' title. "You can never stop what someone has got in his head, but we can stop the transfer of information in written or electronic form," Mosley told the official Formula 1 website. "If you are prepared to check, and we have demonstrated that we are, then somebody using such information would be very unwise because in a modern F1 team you cannot do it without leaving traces and we will find those traces.
Sports Columnists
Actually, the answer is that person who joins Dooley as the two biggest sports legends in the history of the state. Hank Aaron. "It was kind of a special thrill meeting him, and I guess you can say, 'awe,' because we're both from Mobile," Dooley said. "I used to always say that we both were from the wrong side of the tracks, because we both grew up with very, very modest means. But we were on different sides of tracks because of segregation back then. To follow his career and then to finally sit down and have dinner with Hank was a thrill." Dooley sighed, adding softly, "So, you know, if some people feel that way about me, I can understand how they feel."
