Junior lends helping hand

Davin Scites credits some of his success at Motor Mile Speedway this season to a familiar yet unlikely source: Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Scites, who out-dueled heavyweight Philip Morris on Saturday to become the track's second repeat Late Model winner of the year, is a resident of Cleveland, N.C., where Earnhardt lives.

Last summer, Nextel Cup's most popular driver invited Scites to move his Late Model team into the shop in nearby Mooresville where Earnhardt's JR Motorsports housed its Busch, Late Model and Hooters Pro Cup programs.

"He said, 'Hey, use my shop' and helped my guys out and just took me in," Scites said.

When JR Motorsports relocated 15 minutes away to a new 66,000-square-foot complex this year, Scites stayed at the old facility.

More bands join the party at Stagecoach

The Eagles are getting company when the band kicks off the Stagecoach Festival in Indio this May.

The second annual country-music event expanded the lineup on its newly announced third day by adding the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Shooter Jennings, the Sons of San Joaquin, Chuck Wicks and Don Edwards, which will play at the Empire Polo Field on May 2. The festival will also include members of Professional Bull Riders.

Earlier in the week, festival organizers announced the addition of a Friday date to be headlined by the Eagles, with performances from John Fogerty, Trisha Yearwood, Shelby Lynne, Glen Campbell and Rissi Palmer.

Natick woman critical after Friday wreck

A Natick woman remains in "very critical" condition after a five-car crash last Friday, police said yesterday.

The accident is still being investigated by both the Framingham Police Department and the Middlesex District Attorney's office. No one has been charged or cited in the accident. Investigators may have video evidence of the crash because a limousine involved was equipped with a special camera.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Speen Street and Rte. 30 around 4:50 p.m., police spokesman Lt. Paul Shastany said.

Two vehicles were turning left from Rte. 30 to Speen Street when witnesses say a BMW sports utility vehicle plowed into the cars.

One of the drivers of the vehicles that were hit was knocked unconscious and appeared to have head injuries.

The short film festival in my head

This may be because my dreams resemble a non-stop 24/7 rolling to-do list. I used to dream about spreadsheets a lot (working at the time in a job that required pages and pages of them). Now my dreams are more about the general to do list of the day.

Do you think that the quality/depth/memorability (is that a word?) of your dreams influences the quality of the sleep had while experiencing them?

Facebook photos sting Minn. high school students

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — For 16-year-old Nick Laurent, walking out of Eden Prairie High School yesterday to protest the school's punishment of students seen partying on Facebook pages was about asking administrators to be fair.

More than a dozen students joined Laurent after learning of the walkout from fliers the junior handed out the day before. The students said school administrators overreacted to the perception that students in the photos were drinking.

"It's the loudest thing we could do," said Laurent, who organized the walkout but said he wasn't one of the students in the photos.

Laurent tried to make his point by passing out red plastic cups that were similar to those seen in some of the photos. He noted that it was impossible to see what was inside the cups, so administrators couldn't prove that students were drinking.

Regions and territories: The Golan Heights

Rainwater from the Golan's catchment feeds into the Jordan River. The area provides a third of Israel's water supply.

The land is fertile, with the volcanic soil being used to cultivate vineyards and orchards and to raise cattle. The Golan is also home to Israel's only ski resort.

Stumbling blocks

Syria wants to secure the return of the Golan Heights as part of any peace deal. In late 2003, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said he was ready to revive peace talks with Israel.

In Israel, the principle of returning the territory in return for peace is already established. During US-brokered peace talks in 1999-2000 former Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak had offered to return most of the Golan to Syria.

But the main sticking point during the 1999 talks is also likely to bedevil any future discussions.
